Homemade Pear Jam (Simple, Sweet & Perfect for Autumn)

When pears are in season, they’re abundant, sweet, and fragrant — but they don’t keep for long once ripe. That’s why pear jam is such a wonderful recipe: it captures the delicate flavour of fresh pears in a jar, ready to enjoy all year round.

This recipe is the same one I show in my [YouTube video], where I walk step by step through the process. Whether you’ve got a glut from your own tree, picked some up at the market, have a father-in-law like me with a seemingly very productive tree or simply want to try a new jam flavour beyond the classics, pear jam is a perfect choice for beginners and experienced preservers alike!

Why Make Pear Jam?

Pear jam is one of those preserves that feels special because you don’t see it often in the shops. It’s:

  • Light, floral, and delicately sweet — perfect on toast or scones.
  • A great filling for cakes, pastries, or tarts.
  • Delicious swirled into yogurt or porridge.
  • An excellent way to use up a glut of ripe pears.

Plus, it’s simple: just fruit, sugar, and lemon juice — no fuss!

Ingredients (Can be scaled up/down):

  • 1.5kg Fresh Pears (peeled, cored, and chopped)
  • 1kg Granulated sugar
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 💡 Tip: Slightly underripe pears work best as they have more natural pectin to help the jam set

Instructions:

Step 1 – Prepare the pears
Peel, core, and chop the pears into small pieces. Weigh the fruit so you know how much sugar to add (3:2 ratio pear to sugar)

Step 2 – Combine with sugar
Place the pears in a preserving pan, with the sugar and lemon juice. Stir and let sit for 10–15 minutes to draw out the juice.

Step 3 – Cook gently
Heat slowly until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a boil. Simmer for 20–30 minutes until the jam thickens. Stir often to prevent sticking.

Step 4 – Test for set
Check set point with a cold plate test — the jam should wrinkle when pushed.

Step 5 – Jar it up
Pour into sterilised jars, seal, and let cool.

Serving Suggestions

Pear jam has a light flavour that pairs beautifully with lots of foods:

  • Spread on toast, crumpets, or scones.
  • Used as a filling for sponge cakes or pastries.
  • Stirred into yogurt, porridge, or overnight oats.
  • Paired with soft cheeses like brie or mascarpone.
  • Warmed slightly and spooned over ice cream or pancakes.

Pear jam is a beautiful way to preserve the flavours of autumn, with a taste that’s both delicate and comforting. With just a few simple ingredients and a little time in the kitchen, you’ll have jars of golden jam to enjoy long after pear season has passed.
