3 Easy Homemade Hummus Flavours | Sweet Chilli, Onion Chutney & Roasted Pepper

Hummus is one of those magical recipes — quick to make, endlessly versatile, and far tastier when you make it yourself. Once you’ve mastered the base recipe, you can get creative with flavours that go far beyond the plain tubs you find in the supermarket.

This post is all about three of my favourite twists: Sweet Chilli, Onion Chutney, and Roasted Red Pepper. Each one brings a unique kick, and they’re all simple enough to whip up in minutes

The Base Hummus Recipe

Before we add the flavours, let’s start with a classic base. All you need is:

  • 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained (save the liquid!)
  • 2 tbsp Cashew Butter (or tahini)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2–3 tbsp aquafaba (the chickpea water)
  • Salt to taste (I dont really use)

Simply blitz everything together in a food processor until smooth. Adjust with a little more aquafaba for creaminess or lemon juice for extra tang.

Flavour 1: Sweet Chilli Hummus

Sweet, tangy, and with a gentle kick of heat — this one’s a crowd-pleaser.

How to make it:

  • Taste and adjust — more sauce for extra sweetness and spice
  • Add 2–3 tbsp of sweet chilli sauce to your base hummus and blitz until fully incorporated.

Flavour 2: Onion Chutney Hummus

This is the flavour that surprises people most — but it works brilliantly. The chutney adds sweetness and depth, giving the hummus a slightly caramelised flavour profile.

How to make it:

  • Stir 2 tbsp of onion chutney into your hummus (either homemade or shop-bought).
  • Blitz until smooth, or leave it slightly chunky for texture

Flavour 3: Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

A classic for a reason — roasted peppers bring smokiness, sweetness, and vibrant colour.

How to make it:

  • Blend in 1–2 roasted red peppers (from a jar or roasted fresh at home).
  • Drizzle with extra olive oil and sprinkle with smoked paprika to serve

Serving Ideas

Homemade hummus is perfect for more than just dipping:

  • Spread it inside wraps or sandwiches.
  • Use as a base for Buddha bowls.
  • Dollop it alongside grilled meats or veggies.
  • Serve as part of a mezze platter with olives, falafel, and flatbreads.

What I love about hummus is that once you know the base, you can play around endlessly — try sun-dried tomatoes, harissa, even a swirl of pesto. These three flavours — Sweet Chilli, Onion Chutney, and Roasted Pepper — are just the beginning.
