Every witch needs a good brew bubbling away in their cauldron… and this one is no exception. Deep, dark blackberries and crisp autumn apples come together with a touch of spice to create something magical. This isn’t just jam — it’s Witch’s Brew Jam: a spooky seasonal treat perfect for Halloween parties, autumn breakfasts, or even as a wicked little homemade gift
Why Make Witch’s Brew Jam?
This preserve is all about autumn in a jar:
- Blackberries bring rich flavour and hauntingly deep colour.
- Apples add sweetness and natural pectin to help the jam set.
- A touch of cinnamon gives just enough warmth to make it feel seasonal and comforting.
It’s an easy recipe with a big payoff — and it doubles as a fantastic edible gift for Halloween
Ingredients (Can be scaled up/down):
- 1kg blackberries (fresh or frozen)
- 500g apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1kg granulated sugar
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 150ml water (reduce slightly if using frozen berries)
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon (optional: a pinch of cloves
Equipment (Affiliate Links):
Instructions:
Step 1 – Prepare the fruit
Add the chopped apples to a large pan with the lemon juice and water. Simmer for about 20 minutes until the apples are soft.
Step 2 – Add the blackberries
If frozen, let them defrost fully before adding. Simmer together until everything melds into a dark, rich base. Use a potato masher to break down the apples for a smoother texture
Step 3 – Add the magic
Stir in the cinnamon (and optional cloves). Then gradually add the sugar, a third at a time, until fully dissolved.
Step 4 – Boil to set
Turn up the heat and bring to a rolling boil for 10–15 minutes
Step 5 – Test the set
- Or try the classic plate test: if the jam wrinkles when pushed, it’s ready.
- Use a jam thermometer (affiliate opportunity) and aim for 105°C.
Step 6 – Jar it up
Let the jam rest for 10 minutes, then spoon into sterilised jars
